August 8th, 2010

The Friends of Wyman Park Dell invite you to an informal reception on Thursday, August 26 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Dell.  Meet the stone masons who are rebuilding the stone wall in Wyman Park Dell, learn about their ancient craft, and see the progress to date.  No RSVP required.  Many of the dry stone masons were trained at the Dry Stone Conservancy in Lexington, Kentucky.  For more information about dry stone walls, visit www.drystone.org.

Wall Replacement Project

August 3rd, 2010

Orange fencing, construction equipment and large piles of stone are now filling the Dell’s lower lawn thanks to an exciting project to rebuild the park’s crumbling stone walls.  Expert “dry stone wallers” have travelled from afar to spend the next few months working on this massive job.  Many of them trained at the Dry Stone Conservancy in Lexington, Kentucky.  Using local Butler sandstone and reclaimed stones from the original 100-year-old wall, each worker will be able to complete approximately 5 feet of wall per day per person.  Work will being at around 7:30 a.m. and go until mid-afternoon on weekdays.  This project will be completed in about 5 months.  Once the wall has been replaced, new benches will be installed.

An opportunity to meet the dry stone wallers and to learn about their craft will be offered in late August.  Check the calendar for more information.
